hitchhikers

during my Master’s program, i began exploring how to extend my identity as an artist beyond the ‘white cube’ of the gallery. my goal was to foster connection and spark joy & curiosity in people’s everyday lives. the hitchhikers are one of my approaches to these goals emphasizing color and whimsy.

the intervention is simple: a clay figure offered in exchange for a story or a photo. each hitchhiker carries a note inviting them to be taken by "you," along with an introduction (including their name) and contact details (Instagram and email). this allows participants to send me updates on the journeys of the hitchhikers.

the project is driven by a few key questions:

how can art create tangible connections?

can people connect simply by touching the same object or contributing to a shared story?

will commuters take the time to engage with these figures?

and ultimately, how far can they travel?

i consider this an ongoing project. current phases include adding ease and clarity to the tracking process, producing new hitchhikers to release into the world, and keeping in touch with those already adventuring. to stay up-to-date on the hitchhikers and their adventures, you can follow their journey here or on Instagram: @hitch.hiker.adventures.

hi! I’m lomi

my story has not been added to since december. though Bailey believes i am with a lovely person in rural, or small town Netherlands. due to privacy concerns this is the only photo of me available :)

Bailey sent me to the train station in december where i waited on top of a piano. she has not heard from me since. she hopes that wherever i am, i’m making new friends!

hi there! My name is Madden.

parci is the name, hitchhiking is the game

i’ve been to three countries and counting! i first got a ride with Danique; we traveled together for about four months. then i decided to try hitchhiking from the airport in Tangier.
